Specimen Requirement

For adult and pediatric patients > 80 lbs:
15 – 20 mL of blood is collected and distributed between the aerobic (FAN) and anaerobic (ANA) bottle. If less than 20 mL is collected, then 10 mL is inoculated in the aerobic bottle and the remaining into the anaerobic bottle.

For pediatric patients 30 – 80 lbs:
5 – 10 mL of blood is collected and injected into the aerobic bottle (FAN).

For pediatric patients ? 4 y/o:
No more than 4 mL of blood is collected and injected into the pediatric bottle (PFP).

Min. Volume

Aerobic bottle (FAN): 10 mL

Anaerobic bottle (ANA): 5 mL

Pediatric bottle (PF): 0.5 mL

Special Instructions

BacT/Alert blood culture bottles will be put on the BacT/Alert 3D to be continuously monitored for growth.

Non-BacT/Alert blood culture bottles will be manually checked twice a day for growth.
